Over the past few months, we’ve been noticing more and more energy-related news articles suggesting a bright future for the industry. Obviously this is good news for our students and recent graduates, and in this entry, we’ll look at why this is so.

Right now, and in the years ahead, a number of factors are coming together to paint an increasingly rosy picture for new energy grads. The first of these is quite simply that the industry is picking up again following the painful recession only a few short years ago. In a news report filed by CTV earlier this year, Don Herring of the Canadian Association of Oilwell and Drilling Contractors said that “Activity levels are very strong, running about 75% capacity, and puts us about 100 rigs ahead of where we were last year and kind of on a par with where we were in 2008.”1

His sentiments are backed up by students who are finding the job market a much easier puzzle to crack this year than last. Petroleum Engineering Technology student Ryan Miller told CTV “It’s looking like it’s really picking up and it’s nice to know I’m not going to have a summer without work,” and he’s not alone when it comes to employment. SAIT’s 2010 Graduate Employment Survey results show an increase in recent MSE graduate employment rates of 5% to an impressive 94% among those who responded.2 Moreover, out of our 11 full-time, day programs, 5 reported employment rates of 100%. We expect to see even better results in 2011.

A recently elected Tory majority in Ottawa is another plus. Following the election results, Greg Stringham, a vice-president with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, told CBC news that a strong Tory majority is good news for Western Canadian provinces reliant on energy-industry revenues. “They understand our industry,” he said of the Conservatives; “The continuity there is really good in that they will be able to move forward with the policies that they had been considering, that had been kind of bogged down in the minority governments that were there in the past.”3

Yet perhaps the most significant factor in all of this is the increasing age of the existing workforce. This year the first baby boomers will reach the ripe age of 65, meaning they’ll soon be heading for brighter shores in retirement, leaving a huge human resources gap. And this gap, it seems, will be there whether or not the economic recovery continues on its current, speedy trajectory. According to projections made by the Petroleum HR Council, “even if energy prices and industry activity levels are low, there remains a need to hire approximately 39,000 workers just to replace workers lost due to age-related attrition.”4 If business continues to boom, the council says, this number could be as high as 130,000!

This isn’t just good news for Petroleum Engineers. The Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada (PHRCC) predicts that the energy industry will be seeking other skilled workers and professionals such as plant operators, steam and power engineers, production accountants, field operators, rig crews, and environmental and regulatory personnel in droves over the next 10 or so years.5

Considering all of this, it remains our (somewhat biased) opinion that there’s no better time to be a MacPhail School of Energy student, alumnus, or alumna!

On Thursday March 24, MSE students and their families funnelled into MacDonald Hall and the Atrium for the MacPhail School of Energy’s 2011 Annual Student Awards Ceremony. Altogether, the students were awarded 117 awards worth close to $200,000 — all of which was made available by our generous partners from industry. This tremendous outpouring of support is testament to the importance of the ongoing, mutually beneficial relationships that MSE maintains with its industry partners. The money that they invest in students today ensures that they will have the best possible employees to choose from tomorrow.

For the students, this was a special night honouring their extraordinary effort and achievements. Their parents, families, Instructors, Academic Chairs, as well as the Dean, Associate Dean, and other MSE employees were all on-hand to share in their success. The night was a particularly gratifying experience for those of us who make our living as educators because it reminded us of our ultimate mandate: to facilitate higher-level and exceptional learning.

Before the awards were officially presented, the audience got a chance to hear from a couple of student representatives who spoke on behalf of their peers. 2nd Year PT Student Ryan Miller and Students Union President Courtney Garlough both made compelling speeches expressing their gratitude towards the donors, and a positive outlook for the future of all of the students present. Everyone who heard them speak, and who knows anything about what our students accomplish every day, has to agree on one thing: if these individuals represent the future of the energy industry, then we’ll be in good shape for many years to come.

Back in August, SAIT welcomed three planes to Calgary which together carried 92 Angolan men and women sent by Angola LNG to undergo uniquely customized training in a variety of disciplines. At the time, none of them had any sense of the challenges they would face, nor of the experiences they would enjoy over the course of their six months in Canada.

The trainees’ intense schedule, which saw them in class six days per week, was perforated with a number of exciting cultural experiences. These activities, intended to give the trainees a broad sense of what it means to be Canadian, included outings to the skating rink, the ski hill, and to Boundary Ranch in Kananaskis where they enjoyed a sleigh ride and – in true Stampede spirit – got to try their luck at mechanical calf roping. But even having done all of this, what would the better part of a year spent in Canada be without experiencing a hockey game? In December, the troop of Angolans not only attended a hockey game, they put the Canadians in the stadium to shame with their distinct and noisy brand of Angolan enthusiasm. In fact, they cheered so loud that the General Manager of the Hitmen hockey club offered the entire crew free seats for another game.

When they weren’t out experiencing Canadian culture, the trainees were hard at work studying to master intricate and complex topics included in Operations, Instrumentation, Mechanical, and Electrical courses. Instructors from the MacPhail School of Energy, the School of Manufacturing & Automation, and the Centre for Academic Learner Services worked together to deliver the courses and each of them did an incredible job. As a testament to their efforts, one of the trainees exclaimed: “I can’t imagine a better place to learn technical subjects with such clarity.”

Graduation was the culmination of all the hard work that has brought the trainees to the end of their term at SAIT. The graduation ceremonies were much more than a celebration of what each of these graduates has accomplished over the past few months: for many of them, graduation marked the start of a new life.

The trainees departed SAIT, and Canada, on February 5. We hope that each of them will look back on their time spent here with fondness and joy.

On November 9, the MacPhail School of Energy hosted its first annual Energy Sector Luncheon: an event intended to raise the profile of the school by showcasing it in front of top energy industry professionals.

The sold-out lunch featured best-selling author Peter Tertzakian, who delivered a fascinating talk on the trends, challenges, opportunities, and threats confronting the energy industry.

Mr. Tertzakian, himself an expert in economics, finance, and energy, acknowledged the healthy state of today’s energy industry, but warned of impending changes. He pointed out, as a basic principle, that as wealth rises, so too does energy consumption. Yet wealth is not an immutable resource; it has a tendency to decline just as readily as it increases. This was quite clearly demonstrated by the financial crisis of the last couple years. Such occurrences, he warned, should be regarded as indications that the world will likely not always be as financially well-off as it is today. What this ultimately means for the energy industry is that it cannot afford to be complacent – if energy businesses want to succeed they must keep one step ahead of changes, which are inevitable.

Tertzakian made clear that, even now, we are in the midst of significant change. For example, energy that has traditionally been regarded as flowing in one direction, from Canada into the United States, has found new markets in emerging economies overseas. That these emerging economies are showing an increased interest in renewable types of energy complicates matters even more. Take the Build Your Dream Company in China as an example: it employs over 10,000 employees dedicated to nothing but the development of the electric car. After being given the chance to drive a prototype, Tertzakian exclaimed that electric vehicles are not only a threat on the basis of their being environmentally friendly, but also because they have the potential to obliterate gas vehicles when it comes to performance. Widespread adoption of electric vehicle technology by a country like China could have huge implications for the energy industry in Canada, especially considering our increasing dependency on the energy demands of emerging economies.

It is changes like these that businesses must be cognizant of and anticipate in order to be successful going forward cautioned Tertzakian. In saying this, he pointed to several notable MSE graduates whose success he attributes to their being progressive and forward-thinking. He suggested that the industry in general ought to follow the example of people like Keith MacPhail, David Johnson, and Murray Cobbe.

Tertzakian ended his speech with a hypothetical question: “What would you have done in 2005 if you knew what you know now about the state of the energy industry?” His assumption, of course, was that many of those in the room would have acted differently had they better anticipated the changes of the future. As a fitting takeaway, Tertzakian left his audience with a sound piece of advice: don’t be in denial about change, instead, strive to lead the change.

When all was said and done, over $15,000 had been raised for a new MSE scholarship – $2000 of which was personally donated by Mr. Tertzakian. Additionally, Tertzakian, along with several high-profile guests including Peter Watson, the Deputy Minister of Energy; John Gorman, VP of Halliburton’s Canada operations; and Mark Selked, President of PSAC (Petroleum Services Association of Canada), promised a visit to SAIT as a follow-up to the event. The enormous success of our first Energy Sector Luncheon all but ensures that there will be many more in the years to follow.

We would like to extend a big thank-you to everyone who was involved in the event’s planning and execution, to the guests who attended, and to Peter himself for being so generous with his time and, of course, for his financial commitment.

SAIT Polytechnic’s Trades and Technology Complex received another huge boost today when the families of two SAIT alumni – David Johnson and Murray Cobbe – announced they will each contribute $5 million to the Promising Futures™ Campaign.

During a celebration with hundreds of students and staff, SAIT President and CEO Irene Lewis called the gifts inspiring.

“We are so very thankful for the generosity of the Johnson and Cobbe families,” says Lewis. “David and Murray are fine examples of what can be achieved through the power of inspiration, a lot of hard work and the knowledge gained through a polytechnic education. Their generosity will have significant impact on thousands of students each and every year, inspiring them to fulfill their own personal goals and achieve great results for Alberta’s economy.”

Construction of the three buildings that will comprise SAIT’s Trades and Technology Complex is already well underway. When completed in 2012, they will provide the campus with more than 740,000 square feet of new training space to accommodate up to 8,100 more apprenticeship and full-time students every year. Areas of study benefitting most from the new space will be energy, construction and manufacturing.

In recognition of today’s gifts, the West Wing of the new Trades and Technology Complex will be named the “Johnson – Cobbe Energy Centre.” The facility will be more than 273,000 square feet and located near the centre of SAIT’s campus, completing the revitalization of the 14th Avenue entry from 14th Street to Heritage Hall.

Johnson and Cobbe have more than 70 years combined experience in the energy industry.

Johnson graduated from SAIT in 1976 from Petroleum Engineering Technology. He is the Executive Chairman of Progress Energy Resources Corp. and his experience includes production, reservoir evaluation and operations.

”We are impressed that SAIT is run like a business. SAIT’s Board and management are accountable, responsible and effective. We truly believe that giving to education is the right thing to do and we, like other donors before us, know our contribution will be used purposefully,” says Johnson.

Cobbe graduated from SAIT’s Petroleum Engineering (Reservoir) program in 1970 and has worked primarily in the well services business.

“We have a real connection to SAIT as it represents the start of our careers. Our education provided us and many others with the basis to succeed,” says Cobbe, the Executive Chairman of Trican Well Service. “Providing this gift and giving others the opportunity to build a career is one of the most meaningful things I’ve been able to do. It will leave a lasting legacy.”

The combined $10 million contribution is the latest in a string of significant personal donations made to SAIT during this campaign: $15 million was given by John and Cheryl Aldred in April of this year, and $10 million was given in 2005 by alumnus Keith MacPhail, Chairman and CEO, Bonavista Energy Trust. In 2009, a group of 10 leaders in Calgary’s residential construction industry – known as the Founding Builders – also contributed $1 million each to the campaign. They include: Avi Amir, Wayne Chiu, Scott Haggins, Tom Mauro, Al Morrison, Jay Westman, Carma Developers LP, QUALICO, Shane Homes Limited and Stepper Custom Homes Inc.

“Dave and Barb Johnson and Murray and Connie Cobbe are two couples who firmly believe that they can make a difference. Their hope is to inspire others through their generous gifts, just as they were inspired by others,” says MacPhail, who serves as Chair of SAIT’s Promising Futures Campaign Cabinet. “There is an incredible transformation taking place at SAIT through the Trades and Technology Complex, one that will have a positive impact for generations to come. Today’s gifts are an unbelievable act of generosity and add momentum to the Promising Futures Campaign, bringing it to more than 80 per cent of its $75 million goal. We encourage others to step forward and help us reach that target.”

Personal donations supporting the Trades and Technology Complex supplement the Government of Alberta’s contribution of $300 million in 2008.

School of Information and Communications Technology alumnus has become the first winner of SAIT’s “LAUNCH” business plan competition – designed to encourage young entrepreneurs who aspire to build technology, science or knowledge-based business in the Calgary area.

David Milan, a 2009 graduate from SAIT’s Film and Video Production program, was awarded a first place bounty of cash and services valued at $72,000 before a gathering of about 100 family members, sponsors, dignitaries and SAIT representatives June 24 in Macdonald Hall.

Milan’s plan was developed to advance the start-up of a business he is creating to provide high quality, low-cost modular film equipment to independent filmmakers lacking the means to access mainstream production studio equipment.

“His plan did an excellent job of depicting a well-defined market, a strong understanding of client needs and the unique value his product delivers,” said Alex Zahavich, Director of SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services department that coordinated the LAUNCH competition.

The first place winnings are highlighted by $20,000 in cash from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology that Milan intends to reinvest into his company, Petrol Films. His other winnings include free office space on the SAIT campus and up to $10,000 in legal costs from Fasken Martineau.

Watch David Milan speak about what it means to him to win LAUNCH.

Britton Ledingham, a recent graduate of SAIT’s Photojournalism program, teamed with Joel Kelly to win second prize valued at $51,000 and including $10,000 in cash from SAIT. The pair’s graphic design enterprise provides everything from logo design to wedding photography.

Third place – and a prize package valued at up to $46,000 – went to Travis Cullen, a recent graduate of SAIT’s Electrical Engineering Technology program for his plan supporting the company he has launched to construct control centres that reduce hazards posed by arc flash incidents.

Honourable mention went to Lynden LePage and the teams of Jeremy Anchan and Tyler Everitt, and Jordan Ellams and Cindy Labrecque. All were SAIT graduates in 2009.

Altogether, 30 individuals participated in the inaugural LAUNCH competition. They began by submitting a brief concept paper that was reviewed by a group of competition screeners who provided feedback and selected those to move on to a second round calling for more detailed business plans. A review of those plans saw the field narrowed once again to include a select few who were each asked to make a brief presentation to a panel of judges.

Four Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) students have been harnessing the sun’s power to provide light to people in developing countries who do not have access to electricity. Inspired by Light Up the World, an organization that has brought LED (light-emitting diode) lighting to countries across the globe, Chris McDiarmid, Christine Nickel, Trevor Schwartzenberger and Marc Tardioli started the SAIT Global Lighting Initiative to design and build their own lighting unit.

“There are billions of people in the world who use kerosene lamps as their only source of light after dark,” says Nickel. “Unfortunately, kerosene lamps produce very little light, are expensive to run and fill homes with dangerous smoke.”

“As our course project, we decided to see how we could also help bring practical, economic and environmentally safe lighting to those who need it,” says McDiarmid.

Their working prototype has a solar-charged battery that, in turn, powers a LED light source.

“This is just the start of what we hope will be an ongoing project involving EET students at SAIT,” says Schwartzenberger. “While we have created the basic design of the unit, there is scope to increase the efficiency of the prototype.”

Tardioli adds: “It’s exciting knowing how much potential this project has to help improve the quality of so many peoples’ lives.”

According to the team’s instructor, Darko Stelkic from the MacPhail School of Energy, providing light to communities without access to the power grid can enhance education, communications and health while reducing expenses and dependence on fossil fuels.

“In the remote Ecuadorian Amazon, providing renewable energy systems has promoted family-community ownership and resulted in local people being trained to ensure long-term sustainability of the equipment. And in Sierra Leone, schools that have installed LED light units have benefited the entire community by providing much needed light in the evening to village groups, as well as students,” says Stelkic.

At the EET Second Year Project Showcase in April, the SAIT Global Lighting Initiative was marked highest overall by EET instructors among 20 projects. Darko anticipates that by this time next year, EET students will reach their goal of lighting up lives by installing a LED system in a community in a developing country.

Process Operations students were given the chance of a lifetime, to study in Singapore!

In the end, three students were chosen for this opportunity, Alex McBain, Nathan Bernard, & Wayne Tams (pictured, L-R) We spoke with Alex, Nathan and Wayne, and they are all very excited about this opportunity.

The trip is a 2-week educational- and cultural-experience at the Institute of Technical Education in Singapore. These Process Operations students will attend classes similar to those that they are attending here at SAIT, and get the chance to partake in social and cultural activities. All expenses are taken care of, including flights & accommodation. Not a bad deal!

When there, Alex, Nathan & Wayne’s time will be pretty action-packed, with most of their days already filled with classes, cultural and social activities. The guys will have some spare time though, and they also have the option to extend their stay in Singapore if they wish; an opportunity they are thinking about taking up while they have the chance. With exams coming up shortly after they return, the pressure will be on to study, study, study!

None of the students have been to Singapore before, and this will be Nathan’s first time out of the country! Seeing what life is like in Singapore was a big drawcard for all three, saying that they can’t wait to see what life is like on an island, go diving, and of course make some international business contacts. The energy industry in Singapore seems to be growing, said Alex, with companies like ExxonMobil & BP having a base there. The guys hope to be able to update their resume with references and contacts, and have an even better chance of scoring an awesome job when they graduate.

Have fun, guys.. We can’t wait to see the photos and hear your stories when you get back!
